Google My Business is rolling out desktop messaging

Google has started to roll out desktop messaging as part of its Google My Business desktop interface. This feature isn’t live for everyone yet, but it soon will be.

Previously, if you received a message from a customer through Google My Business, you were only able to respond through the mobile app — not ideal for companies that have customer service staff working at desktop computers. So, it’s likely this development will be great news for many business owners and workers.

Google seems to be pushing their Google My Business messaging service as the moment, perhaps because the COVID-19 pandemic is still leaving customers with a lot of questions. Back in December, the platform introduced local messaging so people browsing nearby businesses could get in touch with specific companies quickly and easily.

This move will simply make it easier for business owners to respond to the queries they receive. You’ll no longer have to keep an eye on your phone, and anyone who is logged into your account from their computer will be able to reply to messages that come through quickly and easily. It’s likely this will provide a better experience for both you and your clients.

If you already have this new feature, you’ll see ‘Messages’ listed in the left-hand sidebar when you log in to Google My Business on desktop. This is essentially your inbox so, when you click it, you’ll see all of the messages you’ve sent and received. You can then reply to any outstanding queries here.

A lot of local SEOs seem to be welcoming this change on Twitter, and we imagine it’s going to be a huge help for businesses that tend to get a lot of direct questions through Google My Business. What do you think of this development — is it going to make your life easier?

Here at Glass Digital, we can help you keep up with Google’s frequent updates and improve your local SEO results. For a free and friendly consultation, get in touch with an organic search expert.
