My first month as a Glass Digital copywriter

My first four weeks at Glass Digital have flown over. Although, at the same time, I feel like I’ve been part of the team for much longer. This is all thanks to the welcoming team, the interesting projects I’ve worked on, and the relaxed but productive office atmosphere here.

When I first left university with a degree in magazine journalism, I wasn’t entirely sure what kind of job would suit me best — I just knew I wanted to write. Then, by interning and taking short-term contracts at various press agencies, magazines and arts organisations, I learned that I’d like to work on something different every day. Additionally, as the world is becoming increasingly digital, I wanted to focus more on producing online content. Here, as a Content Development Executive, I get to combine all of these things.

There are three main parts to the job: writing articles for various platforms, optimising the content on our clients’ websites, and content marketing. While I’ve been writing professionally for a couple of years now and already had a basic understanding of SEO, there’s so much more to digital copywriting than I’d previously known. Fortunately, everyone at Glass Digital is fantastic at what they do, which motivates me immensely, and I’ve learned so much already.

So far, I’ve spent a lot of time writing articles for online publishers. These have covered everything from interior design to the lack of women working within the engineering industry, and I’ve really enjoyed carrying out the research to put them together. The rest of my time has been devoted to optimising the content on a couple of our clients’ websites. This has been my biggest challenge so far, as it’s entirely new to me. There are so many tricks to it, but I think I’m finally starting to get my head around them now.

One thing I particularly enjoy about the work we do is that it’s all very collaborative. The copy team gets together to brainstorm content ideas, we receive opportunities from the outreach team and we proofread each other’s work to ensure it’s of the highest possible standard. This has been great for me in terms of receiving feedback and getting to know the team.

I’m certainly enjoying the work side of things, but I also love that there’s just the right amount of play here, too. On my very first day, I was sent an invitation to join the office in watching the England v Wales football match on TV later that week. There was a buffet, decorations and drinks, which everyone really appreciated. And, just this morning, we were all treated to a lovely breakfast spread. Glass Digital certainly knows how to keep its staff happy, and I think we’re all a lot more inspired and productive for it.

Going in to my second month here, I’m looking forward to writing about an even larger range of topics and learning more about optimisation and content marketing. I’m really enjoying my time here and am excited to see what’s to come.
